Bird Poo Island
Straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie
Yesterday, I got to go out to my friend’s cottage on Lake Couchiching. We went out on his boat and explored the lake for a bit and came across a pretty unique sight.
There were hundreds of birds on the island (which is actually called Ship Island) and all that white….is bird poop. They’re Double-crested Cormorants and they typically nest in colonies around the shore, on trees, islets or cliffs. They are known to kill trees they nest in, and everything else between the nest and the ground (smaller trees, shrubs and other plants) by pooping on them. Since they typically nest in colonies…the poop adds up quickly.
