OPP CLEARED IN BARRIE DEATH(Monday February 8, 2010)
The Special Investigations Unit has cleared an OPP officer of wrongdoing in the Boxing Day death of 49 year old Paul Proulx of Barrie. SIU investigators say the officer tried to stop a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner, northbound on Highway 400. The driver did not stop, but exited at Mapleview Drive and continued north on Welham Road. Their speed, at times, reached 120 kilometres an hour. The pursuit ended when the vehicle slid under a tractor trailer that was parked in an ice-covered parking lot. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. SIU Director, Ian Scott, has concluded the man' death can be attributed to his attempt the elude apprehension, icy road conditions and his inability to stop given those conditions.

With three snowmobile-related deaths in 39 hours last week, Huronia West OPP have compiled a list of safe sledding tips:
1) Never ride on closed trails. To do so is trespassing. Trails are closed for your safety.
2) Never drink and ride. A snowmobile is a motor vehicle as defined under the Criminal Code of Canada.
3) Avoid waterways. Do not confuse a snowmobile for a boat, it is not. If you break through the ice, you and it will sink.
4) Always obey the rules of the trail. They are there for your and others safety.
5) Don’t Speed! The speed limit while travelling in urban areas is 20 km/h and in rural areas it is 50 km/h, unless stated otherwise on the trail.
6) Wear the proper clothing for snowmobiling. Weather and trail conditions can change quickly, wear clothing that will protect you.
7) Always wear an approved snowmobiling helmet.
8) Always stay on marked trails. Venturing off them may take you onto private property.
9) On all trips, both short and long let someone know your route so if you have problems, emergency service personnel will know where to start looking for you.
10) Carry a cellular phone with a fully charged battery with you in case you have to call for help.
11) Finally, remember as an operator of a snowmobile it is the choices you make while riding that get you home safely or into a collision that could take a life.

Michael Jackson's doctor has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death last year. Dr. Conrad Murray is accused of acting unlawfully and without malice; acting without the caution and circumspection required, when he administered a powerful sedative in an effort to help Jackson sleep. Authorities say Jackson died after being given propofol, a powerful general anesthetic, and two other sedatives. A coroner ruled the singer's death was caused by acute intoxication caused by the drugs. Propofol is only supposed to be administered by an anesthetist in a medical setting, because it depresses breathing and heart rate while lowering blood pressure.

A couple of encouraging signs as Canada drags itself out of the recession.
Housing starts in January reached more than 186-thousand, 10-thousand better than December. In the Barrie (which includes the Town of Innisfil and Springwater Township) construction began on 34 new homes, six more than a year ago, but well off the 99 starts in January 2008.
And a survey by CareerAIM.com found 38-hundred job postings in Canada in January, 2.1 percent more than in December. Even better, is the nearly 18 percent increase in the number of postings in Ontario compared to January last year, the biggest increase of all the provinces.
(Monday, February 8, 2010) It was a busy night for Barrie Police last night as some Super Bowl partiers imbibed a bit too much. One man was found in the city's east end sitting in a snowbank after the game. He was dressed in only his pajamas. Police arrested him and put him in a cell for the night. Another man was spotted stumbling around the Go Station in the south end. He fell on his face five times before Police finally picked him up. And yet another man was arrested. He was found beating a parked car on Gloria St. Police say all three were released earlier this morning when they had sobered up a bit.

How much pop do you drink - one can or bottle a day, a couple a week or more? University of Minnesota research finds people who consume two or more sweetened soft drinks a week have a higher risk of pancreatic cancer. It's thought the high levels of sugar may increase the body's level of insulin, which is made in the pancreas. The sugar may be contributing to pancreatic cancer cell growth. Still, while sugar may be the main culprit in this, researchers also note that people who drink pop on a regular basis also have other poor health habits.

This would have been Stephanie Hoddinott's 21st birthday. But instead of birthday candles, relatives and friends will be holding a candelight vigil for her in the field at Midland Secondary School. Hoddinott was found murdered last month in a home on Irwin Street in Midland. A former boyfriend was found nearby with self-inflicted wounds. He died a few days later at hospital in Toronto. Tonight's vigil begins at 6 o'clock. Donations (cheques only) will be accepted for the OSPCA and the White Ribbon Society
(Saturday February 6, 2010) It was a close call for two young men on Little Lake early last evening. Barrie and Springwater firefighters took a call about a car going through the ice on the lake that sits on Barrie's northern boundry. Once crews arrived, they noticed that the two victims were outside of the vehicle but unable to get back to shore. At that point, the Barrie Fire Department's rescue boat was put into action. The two were rescued and attended to by paramedics. The vehicle is still partially submerged.
(Sunday February 7, 2010) Barrie Police say they're investigating a Downtown assault that left a man lying unconscious on the street. Late last night, paramedics and police arrived at the scene, finding the victim who had been assaulted and had fallen, hitting his head on the ground. He was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, and treated for a large laceration. Police continue their search for the suspect in this case.
(Sunday February 7, 2010) Another tragedy on our trails with the area's third snowmobile fatality in just three days. Yesterday, a 57-year-old man died after his sled left a marked trail then hit a tree. Huronia West OPP say the accident happened at around 2:30 p.m. on Cassell Drive, also known as 50-51 Sideroad in Oro-Medonte Township. Arriving at the scene, police and rescue crews found the man suffering from life-threatening injuries and took him to Barrie's Royal Victoria Hospital, where he succumed to his injuries. A post mortem is scheduled for today.
(Saturday February 6, 2010) A drug bust in Barrie has led to a few other charges. Barrie Police say they executed a warrant at a house on Yonge Street, yesterday, and found a marijuana grow-op and plants street-valued at over $20,000. A 31-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were slapped with a number of possession and trafficking charges. Leaving the scene, police detected a stolen vehicle in the backyard of the house which resulted in another charge for their pair. The woman is also looking at an additional charge of possession of a dangerous weapon after police discovered her taser.
(Saturday February 6, 2010) Bracebridge OPP continue to investigate the area's latest snowmobile fatality. Police say a 54-year-old Mississauga man was riding his sled on South Gibson Lake Road yesterday, when it left the roadway and crashed. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was wearing a protective helmet but that speed and alcohol are being investigated as contributing factors. This is the second snowmobile fatality in the area in the last two days.

Long haul on Highway 400 this morning through Highway 89. A pick up truck clipped the back of a tractor trailer and took out the centre guardrail. The driver was airlifted to hospital with what were thought to be life threatening injuries. His condition has since been upgraded. All southbound lanes were closed for several hours, northbound traffic was affected as well.

Weather gets some the credit for a huge increase in the real estate sales in Barrie last month. Peggy Hill at Prudential LeClair and Associates told KOOL FM NEWS sales of existing homes, condominiums, land and commercial properties totalled 160 in January, compared to 114 a year ago - a 40-percent increase. Hill says the lack of snow and an almost spring-like feel has helped generate sales, as well as low interest rates. She said there seems to be no fear that buyers are biting off more than they can chew, many feeling confident in their current job situation.
Bringing back good memories of AC/DC's "Maximum Overdrive" soundtrack from the 'Who Made Who' album.
This time AC/DC will have a full soundtrack to a much bigger film title: Iron Man 2. The album will feature 15 AC/DC songs, selected from ten of the band's studio albums, ranging from 1976 to 2008. This Soundtrack will be officially released April 19th.

The most talked about commercial from Superbowl involved two of the biggest enemies of late night tv. (See above)
Apple is taking over the world with the i-pod, i-touch, i-phone and now introducing the i-pad. (Oh good, another overpriced gadget for the already saturated market.)
All of this technology is making handwriting become extinct. Gone, are the days when kids were forced to take penmanship in school. Are kids even taught how to handwrite anymore? That was one of my best classes!
Instead, its typing classes, how many words a minute can you type?
There's almost no need to write anymore.. Unless your signing your name, really what else do we need to write free hand?
The daily use of computers, e-mail, facebook, twitter and texting has done a number on my writing skills. I can barely read my own stuff, and my printing is atrocious. Whenever I print now it's all in giant capitol block style letters.
Hey Apple, what's wrong with some old school methods? How about the I-Write!
Answer me this one; why is Kim Kardashian a celebrity? I hope it's not because of that horrible reality show that noone watched! Of course now that her man Reggie Bush is playing in the biggest single sporting event of the year, Superbowl, she has to get her paw prints all over it.
This weekend she will be under more protection than both Peyton Manning & Drew Brees combined... (Check out the pic posted above)
She's going to be chauffered in a ride that would make President Obama jelous. It's a tank/limo hybrid featuring bulletproof windows and functional gun ports, two bars, seven televisions and various emergency escapes hatches, (probably for her bf, so he can secretly escape her ass.) It's a 2009 Armor Horse Vault XXL looks like a combination between a Brinks truck, an 18-wheeler and an ambulance. It seats 28 people and features over six-and-a-half feet of standing room.
The price tag is a hefty $770/hour during Super Bowl week, or around $8,000 for the night, or it can be bought outright for a mere $149,900.
