UPDATE: Vote On New High School In South Barrie Delayed
Full council to vote in two weeks
June 14 – A final decision from city council on a new high school in south Barrie has been put off for two weeks. Councillors were to cast a final vote last night on a site plan for the school, but one councillor was absent. Because last week’s initial vote was so close it was felt the vote should wait until all of council could vote.
June 7 – Barrie may finally be getting a new high school in the south-end. After months of back-and-forth with the school board, council last night gave initial approval to a site plan similar to one it had previously turned down because it does not meet the city’s planning regulations. Councillor Mike McCann says there are some minor changes to the new proposal. Many on council were clearly frustrated with the school board’s refusal to revise its plan. Simcoe County District School board Chair Peter Beacock wondered in a recent interview why council could not be more flexible, noting developers often ask for – and receive – permission to ‘bend the rules’. Council’s approval not yet a done deal. The vote last night was 5-4 in favour with two councillors absent. A final vote will come next week.
