1940 Revisited With Many Young Adults Living With Mom And Dad

Economics, college cited as reasons why

Sign of the times. More young adults are living with parents and relatives than at any other time since 1940 – 36 per cent of women ages 18-34, 43 per cent of men. Increased college education and later marriages might explain why more women are living at home. Women are five times more likely to go to college today than they were in 1940, but college is a lot more expensive than it was then. It’s largely economics keeping men in the nest – same as in 1940 when the lingering effects of the Great Depression kept them under their parent’s roof.
