March Mullets for Simcoe County

Barrie has been identified by the Government of Canada as one in five communities that have growing concerns with youth involved in gang-related activities.

Did you know that youth experiencing mental health challenges are more vulnerable to becoming involved in gang-related activities as a means of coping with their difficulties?  Gang involvement can exacerbate pre-existing mental health issues. Youth living in poverty are susceptible to gang-related behavior due to various factors such as a lack of opportunities, exposure to violence, and social exclusion.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 to launch programs in April 2024. The funds raised from this event will go directly towards programs to assist youth and the caregivers surrounding them to participate in R & R Programs for Restoring Relationships. Our goal is to provide fully sponsored programs to 100 youth throughout 2024.  The five-week program focuses on mental, physical, and relational tools for well-being. The program has a heavy focus on community collaborations and relationship-building tools. People who complete this program will be recognized for their dedication to personal growth and will be invited to become involved in volunteer opportunities furthering their growth by building community connections.

Barrie Families Unite, Barrie Housing, and the R & R Program Facilitator team will provide participants with a journey of forming healthy connections and a sense of belonging. Studies have shown that when youth feel they belong to a community, school, or group, they are less likely to engage in gang-related or violent behavior.

About the need for this programming, Mary-Anne Denny-Lusk, Chief Executive Officer of Barrie Housing, said, “Supportive programs like the R&R Program act as a lifeline, guiding at-risk youth through life’s storms, offering assistance and a compass toward a better future.  Our hope in embracing these initiatives is that our youth find not only resources but also the belief that they are not alone.  Through empathy, mentorship and tailored support, programs like this become the beacons of hope….”

Dean, a workshop participant, said “I have been impacted firsthand by criminal activity that has damaged previously strong family relationships. This program is so important to help not only the people directly involved but also the entire group of loved ones heal. Most people do not have the skills to process the damage done in a healthy way and need guidance and tools to heal themselves and then work towards healing relationships with loved ones. I have been involved in previous workshops facilitated by Amber McAuley and they have been invaluable to my personal growth and healing. This is an important initiative to help build a strong community.
