PONG (1972)

DOOM (1993)

Doom is largely recognized as being the first first-person shooter game in a world now saturated with the genre. It faced great controversy for graphic violence, satanic imagery and violent nature, and was one of the first games to be labeled with an M for Mature rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board. The original Maniac Mansion (which is out there, too) is definitely worth a revisit, but because inspirations for Day of the Tentacle include Chuck Jones cartoons and the history of the United States, it gets the nod here.

SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 (1988)

Since Donkey Kong, Mario has been in more than 200 games. We’re listing this one simply so we can remind you that it was featured – along with the Power Glove – in the 1989 film The Wizard, starring Fred Savage. Does life get more ’80’s than that?

CONTRA (1987)

Bill and Lance are two commandos with the Contra unit, who, due to graphical limitations, were both shirtless in the NES version of the popular arcade game. Contra is a pretty tough game to beat – which is maybe why it introduced cheat codes to the world of video games. Spoiler alert: The Konami Code.

LEISURE SUIT LARRY: LAND OF THE LOUNGE LIZARDS (1987)

Now that you don’t have to guess the answers that verify your age at the beginning of Leisure Suit Larry, revisit it to see if it’s as bad as you thought your parents would think it was if they caught you playing it.

BUBBLE BOBBLE (1986)

Beating Bubble Bobble as a solo player is actually impossible – to get to the true ending, two players need to work collaboratively – and beat 100 levels twice. Better phone a friend in for this one.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (1986)

Technically, although difficult, you can find your way through the entire Legend of Zelda game without a sword, though you’ll need one for the final boss at the end. Just in case you needed a challenge in your life.
