Spring Time in Central Ontario

While the calendar says it’s Spring, don’t put away the snow shovels just yet!

Spring arrived in the early hours of Sunday morning, and while Spring is officially here, it looks like winter doesn’t want to loosen its icy grip on Central Ontario quite yet.

I remember as kids on the first day of Spring, we’d all go outside to play without our jackets on, freeze ourselves and then get sick and stay that way until it actually started to feel like Spring outside.

The calendar doesn’t seem to have it quite right in our part of the world.  Instead of December 21st, Winter generally arrives closer to November 15th, and instead of Spring arriving March 21st, it’s generally closer to April 15th by the time things start to really thaw.

So on February 2nd, when the groundhog suggests 6 more weeks of winter, it’s basically a slam dunk for a prediction.  There’s always going to be 6 more weeks of winter!  It’s only when he predicts an early Spring that he gets it wrong.

While the calendar says it’s Spring, don’t put away the snow shovels just yet.  The real sign that Spring is arriving is when the NHL starts their playoffs and you’re inside watching hockey while at the same time you can hear the bells of the Dikki Dee kid coming up the street in your neighbourhood.  Then, you’ll know Spring has arrived.
