The Pan Am Games are here and despite the initial apathy and the complaints of traffic congestion because of new temporary HOV lane restrictions, so far things are off to a pretty good start.Pan Am5

Most people would agree the opening ceremonies were outstanding and a great reflection on the City of Toronto and Canada itself. It also didn’t hurt that Canada jumped out into the lead in the medal count on the first day of competition on Saturday and still lead the count starting the day today.

Today though will be the first real test of the locals’ nerves as we’ll see what the first rush hour brings in terms of traffic tie-ups this morning and then again later this afternoon. There are lots of stories about to unfold as the days roll into weeks. A Brazil Teamcomical story yesterday was how some of the Brazilian cycling team had to be escorted off the Don Valley Parkway. They were out for some practice and thought the Don Valley looked like a good course to ride. Police escorted them off the highway and into a more safe environment in the City for them to ride.

There are tons of events lined up for today and even more chances for Canadians to continue to raise the medal count.
