Own A Ford Pick-Up Truck? Best You Keep It Locked Up

Takes 9 Spots on IBC Top 10 Stolen Vehicles List

Ford F-Series pick-up trucks are listed in 9 of the top 10 spots on the Insurance Bureau of Canada 2015 list of stolen vehicles; the Cadillac Escalade is also on the list. How often your make and model of vehicle is stolen is one of the factors insurers use to set your insurance premium. Thieves generally steal vehicles for one of four reasons:

To sell abroad: Stolen vehicles are often immediately packed – with their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) still intact – and shipped abroad, where they are sold for many times their original market value.
To sell to unsuspecting consumers: Stolen vehicles may be given a false VIN and then sold to unsuspecting consumers. They can also be dismantled and sold for parts.
To get somewhere: This may be referred to as “joyriding.” Auto theft of any kind is a crime and innocent people may get hurt or killed as a result.
To commit another crime: Stolen vehicles used to commit other crimes are often recovered – abandoned and badly damaged – within 48 hours of their theft.

Rick Dubin, Vice-President, Investigative Services, IBC, notes “None of the top 10 stolen vehicles are equipped with an electronic manufacturer immobilizer as a theft deterrent system, so they are easier to steal. We also see from this list that criminals continue to have a huge demand for AWD/4WD late model high-end vehicles.” In addition, he says Car thieves not only steal your vehicle and the valuables in it, they may steal your identity through your ownership and insurance documents. In 2014, there were 12,729 cases of identity theft in Canada, an increase of 8%.
