UPDATE: United Nations Reacts To North Korean Nuclear Test

Saturday: The UN Security Council is promising significant measures against North Korea for Friday’s nuclear test. It has condemned the North for its brazen defiance with regard to nuclear testing. US ambassador Samantha Power has to use every tool at the UN’s disposal to show the North Korean government there are consequences, though it’s unclear what impact they would have. North Korea has been under UN sanctions since 2006 but has continued to speed up the development of its nuclear and missile programmes.

Friday: North Korea has let loose with another nuclear weapon. It was not quite the strength of the atomic bomb America dropped on Japan in 1945, but close, causing a magnitude-five earthquake and has rattling nerves around the world. South Korea called it an act of “fanatic recklessness” The North says it is now able to build, at will, an array of stronger, smaller and lighter nuclear weapons. The test defied tough international sanctions and long-standing diplomatic pressure for North Korea to curb its nuclear appetite, and raises serious concerns it has moved another step closer to its goal of a nuclear-armed missile that could one day strike the U.S. mainland.
