Kilowatt-Fuelled Trucks Being Tested On Swedish Highway

Electric rails in the pavement also in the works

Sweden is testing technology that fuels electric-powered trucks as they cruise down the highway. A two-kilometre test stretch of highway, north of Stockholm, has been equipped with overhead electrical wires – similar to what you see on streetcars, and electric trains in Europe – that can be used to feed power into trucks that have a hybrid-electric motor. The power is fed into the truck through a current conductor on the roof of the truck. The trial was launched in late June and will continue until 2018. Sweden also plans to test electric highway technology involving an electric rail in the roadway that charges vehicles.
