Health Canada Not Doing Enough To Protect Canadians, Says Watchdog

Department Not Doing Enough Screening on Home, Cosmetic Products

A new report says Health Canada has to step it up. Canada’s eco-watchdog, Environment Commissioner Julie Gelfand today handed down a report that says Health Canada isn’t doing enough to protect Canadians from hazardous chemicals in household and cosmetic products. The audit shows the regulating body doesn’t regularly test cosmetic products to verify the accuracy of the label, and points out current regulations allow for the use of blanket terms in the ingredient lists that could include chemicals of concern to your health. Gelfand’s report suggests Health Canada do more testing and let consumers know terms like “hypoallergenic” and “unscented” don’t mean the product is safe.
