UPDATE: Fraud Investigation At Tanger Outlet Mall

December 8 – South Simcoe Police have pulled images from surveillance video of four people believed to have used gift cards that were fraudulently obtained from Tanger Outlet Mall in Cookstown. Police say a woman, pretending to be a lawyer with a prestigious Toronto law firm, called the Mall November 10 to arrange the purchase of $20,000 in gift cards for a corporate giveaway. She was instructed to provide a bank draft in order to make such a large purchase. At the end of the business day, a suspect, posing as the woman’s assistant arrived with what appeared to be a legitimate bank draft and ID, and was given the gift cards. The draft was rejected by the bank, but not before $11,000 worth of the cards had been used. Video surveillance indicates four people used the cards.

November 13 – Police are on the lookout for a woman who made off with 11-thousand dollars worth of merchandise from the Tanger Outlet Mall.  Apparently a woman called saying she was from a Toronto law firm looking for 20-thousand dollars in gift cards to give away as corporate gifts. She was instructed to show up with a bank draft. Someone did……but by the time it was discovered the draft was a fake the purchases had been made and the woman was gone. Police are now looking at video surveillance as they try to identify the thief.
