Former Barrie Central Student Turned Gold Medalist Among Female Banknote Nominees

'Bobbie' Rosenfeld among 12 on shortlist

A former Barrie Central Collegiate student is on the shortlist of 12 women being considered for a new Canadian banknote in 2018. Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Rosenfeld came to Barrie as a young girl, the daughter of Russian immigrants. She excelled at sports, mainly track and field events. In 1928, she anchored Canada’s Olympic 4 x 100 relay team to a gold medal at the Amsterdam games, also winning a silver medal in the 100m sprint. Also being considered for the banknote are: artists Emily Carr and Pitseolak Ashoona, authors Lucy Maud Montgomery, Pauline Johnson and Gabrielle Roy, pioneering feminists Nellie McClung, Idola Saint-Jean and Therese Casgrain, aircraft designer Elise Macgill, humanitarian Lotta Hitschmanova and businesswomen Viola Desmond.
