New technology may mean we can do away with the set top cable or satellite TV box – and the costs associated with them. Broadcast regulators in the U.S. may soon require cable companies to offer a free app to access TV packages, eliminating the need for the set top box. Customers would also be able to record programs using the system – which is similar to Apple TV and other streaming services – but cable companies would be allowed to charge a fee for that service. If approved in the US, there’s a pretty good chance it would happen in Canada.
