Police are reminding cottage owners this is the time of year to take a few simple steps that could prevent break ins this winter.
OPP say when closing up your summer home for the season, make sure all windows and doors are locked. There is no food or alcohol left behind, lock up all valuables and disable vehicles that will be left on site. Police also recommend you leave your information and a key with someone who might live close to the building if you are unable to check on it from time to time. Police also say taking pictures, recording serial numbers of items and knowing which police unit services your area and having their number is also an essential step to ensuring you are as prepared and protected as possible.
