Barrie Tentatively Commits $5m To Georgian Expansion

College Rushing To Meet Federal Funding Deadline

Georgian College is looking to grow up a bit. At council last night, a bit of a surprise presentation from the Georgian College higher ups, showcasing a proposed 30 million dollar advanced technology and research centre. Council gave an initial nod to the college’s financial request, with funding expected from both the county and provincial level as well. The city says they’ll give the college either 5 mil or 25 per cent, whichever is less, over four years, under the condition the school provide a timeline for a much talked about downtown campus. It’s a rush job getting the money together, as the college says they need to submit to the Federal government their application to expand by next Monday. This after the federal government three weeks ago committed two billion dollars to help fund post secondary education projects that meet certain guidelines.
