Barrie Jobless Rate Plummets, Federal Rate Good While It Lasted

Fewer People Looking For Work in Town

The job market giveth and the job market taketh away. The federal economy lost 32,700 jobs last month, which almost directly offset the 32,000 the federal job market gained the month before. That helped push the national jobless rate up a tenth of a percentage point to 7.1 per cent. Little change on the provincial level, but closer to home, Barrie’s unemployment rate fell a whopping half a percent to 6.1, continuing a month-over-month decline. Mayor Jeff Lehman says it’s good news, but odd news, as fewer people in Barrie were looking for work last month.
