American decathlete Ashton Eaton was seen wearing a Canadian hat at the track meet on Friday in Rio. His wife, Canadian heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton, was born in Saskatchewan and he said he wore it to show his support for her.
Of course, the Internet had a lot to say about this. Many criticised him for not being a loyal American whereas others applauded him for being a supportive husband.
Friday night he responded on Twitter to the criticism.
Have I not represented USA well? Yet u demand more. Ur respect is hard earned. I support the country that produced my wife;who ru2 shame me?

And then she went on to win us a medal!
Because of your love and support, @btheiseneaton is an Olympic bronze medalist. pic.twitter.com/QCdkGnwxxz — Ashton Eaton (@AshtonJEaton) August 14, 2016
I would say the hat definitely helped! I think he did the right thing by supporting his wife while also remaining loyal to where he’s from. Although as Canadians, we’re totally biased!
What do you think – was he out of line to sport apparel supporting a country that he’s not competing for?
