What is the Actual Meaning of 4/20?

We all know what it is...but what does it mean...

Every year people celebrate 4/20 on April 20th by smoking marijuana at 4:20 pm, but where did 4/20 actually come from?

According to the legend, 4/20 originated with a group of Californian high school students who went searching for cannabis crops in 1971. They named themselves the waldos and would meet every day at 4:20 pm to search for the elusive crop.

One of the students, 63-year-old Steve Capper told the Huffington Post:

“We would remind each other in the hallways we were supposed to meet up at 4.20. It originally started out 4.20-Louis, and we eventually dropped the Louis. We’d meet at 4.20 and get in my old ‘66 Chevy Impala, and, of course, we’d smoke instantly and smoke all the way out to Point Reyes and smoke the entire time we were out there. We did it week after week.”

They never did end up finding the marijuana patch.
