This Tortoise Fathered 800 Babies to Save His Species

Diego has single-handedly pulled his species back from extinction

His name is Diego and he’s over 100 years old. Thanks to his sexual exploits, his species of Galapagos giant tortoise (Chelonoidis hoodensis) has been pulled from extinction.

Just 50 years ago, there were only two males and 12 females of his species on the Galapagos Islands and they were so spread out that they couldn’t breed properly.

He’s been a busy boy since his introduction to the islands. According to a genetic study, he’s the father of almost 40% of the offspring that have been released into the wild.

You go Diego!
