St. Dominic’s Competes for Gold

The Olympics in Pyeongchang in February 2018 were record-breaking for the Canadian team. They placed third in overall medal count: 11 gold, 8 silver, and 10 bronze.

While our athletes were in South Korea, athletes at St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School in Bracebridge were having record-breaking seasons in curling and girls junior volleyball.

Athletes are no doubt dedicated to their sport, spending the majority of their days practising to be better. The St. Dominic teams are no exception; the girl’s volleyball team practised every Monday and Wednesday after school, while their games against other Muskoka schools took place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The curling team went to the rink on Wednesdays, while many members practised on their own time.St. Dominic Catholic Secondary school is both a family and a community, and as such every student and staff member supports our teams fully. While the GBSAA game was in full swing, staff and students got updates whenever the team scored. However, after the game came the celebration, and the St. Dominic community erupted with pride in the school and on social media. Mr Strong, our principal, went on Twitter to express congratulations to both our team and the Elmvale team: “Congratulations to the GBSAA Champs – Way to go @St_DominicCSS Junior Girls Vball winning the 5th set. Congratulations to Elmvale for a great season and game.”

Both of these amazing teams broke records, with the St. Dominic’s girls’ volleyball team ending the season as GBSAA champions and the girls curling team winning the Muskoka Parry Sound championships, a best for St. Dominic athletes. With the track and field season coming up, and the badminton season beginning, it is safe to say that St. Dominic’s has golden potential. Congratulations to both record-breaking teams! Go Dragons!
