How does this whole thing work?
The Ontario government supports homeowners and property owners to produce and sell solar electricity. As a homeowner with a solar system installed, you’ll be paid a fixed premium price for the electricity produced each month at your house for the next 20 years. Right now, the rates are the highest they’ll be offered at before continuing advances in solar systems become more affordable.

Is solar right for my house?
Solar power systems are perfect for roofs – or properties – that get sun exposure and minimal shade. But other factors – like the angle and condition of your roof – can impact how well your system will work, too. Solar systems can absolutely work for most people, but it’s a good idea to have a solar power system representative come check out your place for a confident appraisal. Will my neighbours complain about the new look of my property?
Do you mean, will your neighbours be envious of your forward-thinking, environmentally responsible choice? Probably. Aesthetic solar power systems are now attractive, and the character of your home can be maintained while working to your financial benefit. If anything, your neighbours will likely be coming to visit to find out about how they can bring solar power to their own place and start generating income – hopefully they’ll bring back the leaf blower they borrowed, too.

Will my roof get damaged – or worse, cave in because of the weight?
A structural engineer approves the solar panel setup for your house before installation begins. The solar panel system is designed to be light enough to not put much weight on a roof – usually they weigh in at just 3.2 lbs/sq ft. Bonus – solar panels actually help to protect your shingles from the elements.

Will I be living off-grid?
Off-grid systems can be custom-designed, but generally most systems are meant to be on-grid. They interconnect with your existing utility service rather than connect to the utility electrical grid.

How much will it cost for upkeep?
Reputable companies like Sun Flow Solar have studied 30 years of local data, snow, rain, humidity, pollution, sunlight and daylight and have designed solar systems to survive the elements. The panels are meant to withstand wind up to 220 kilometres and last more than 35 years. They can be added to your home insurance coverage, and come with a 3-year installation warranty and 25-year warranty. Regular maintenance isn’t necessary.
